Cross-contamination has to be provably impossible, so construction is chosen for leak detectability before it is chosen for duty. A fully welded plate-and-shell pack removes the gasket from the WFI side altogether; a double-wall gasketed unit is the alternative, its interstitial space vented so a breach shows at the vent rather than in the loop.
